By: Mike Smith, Key-Ads ![]() It has been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I think it is normal for most business, big or small, to return to what they have done for years. It just seems to be easier that way. We are already familiar with it. We know the process. We can predict the results. The list goes on and on. Many times we have a difficult time admitting that the results are not what we had hoped for or even what they once were. Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2016 Chamber Golf Outing. We enjoyed a beautiful day on the course with our members and sponsors.

By: Emily Dammeyer, Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce In a world where the “Fight for Fifteen,” misclassification lawsuits, and collective action litigation are all landing on HR Professionals’ desks daily, it is imperative that the business community keep up with the current wage and hour issues. The final exemption rules were recently issued and beginning December 1, 2016, employees and employers will see some major changes in classifications and wage & hour rules. To help alleviate confusion and offer clear guidelines for our members, the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted a learning opportunity with local firm Eastman & Smith.
Jim Yates, attorney at Eastman and Smith, spent the morning with Chamber members, educating them on the changes to come. His presentation, titled “Final Exemption Rules Issued: Now What?” briefly covered information on legislation that voters will likely see on upcoming ballots (IE: minimum wage increases), but mainly focused on the exemption rules that will be enforced come December. Toledo SBDC Export Assistance Network Hosts 50“Colleen put together a great group of knowledgeable speakers with topics and discussions on real-world exporting and compliance issues I could relate to.” – Lori Schmitt, Bard Manufacturing Company, Inc. By: Colleen Kardasz, Director, Ohio SBDC Export Assistance Network For businesses who export there are two topics among the many considerations that generally get the most attention: money and logistics. What will this cost me? How am I going to get paid? How am I getting my product there? Intrinsically tied to those two topics though is the area of compliance. It’s not a given that having a product that a foreign buyer wants means you can get the product to that person or country. There are rules and regulations for exporting that must be followed, but there are also best practices that can make sure your company not only makes the international sale, but that you actually make money from the exchange.
The Toledo SBDC Export Assistance Network recently hosted 50 professionals at the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce for a 2-day Logistics and Compliance Conference.

"Hosting area business leaders and educators as part of this Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce event was a privilege. It's important to share community spirit and take pride in such fruitful and blossoming partnerships.” - Jay Lake, Manufacturing Workforce Development Community Relations Manager, First Solar In the fall of 2015, the leaders of the Chamber’s EPIC Advisory Council approached Aly Sterling Philanthropy with a challenge: how can we assist more young professionals to become leaders on nonprofit boards? Their solution was to create a training series aimed at preparing next generation leaders to serve the missions of Toledo’s nonprofit organizations: The Board Member Accelerator. The Board Member Accelerator delivered a real-life, hands-on education that empowered 30 EPIC members to successfully govern nonprofit organizations. This series is the first of its kind in Toledo and, to our knowledge, nationally.

So, it’s important we recognize the key components of a fertile environment: good jobs, arts and entertainment, affordable housing, great schools and, of course, a strong sense of community. In the Toledo area, our thriving nonprofit sector provides the roots that underpin our greatest attributes and strongest attractions. World-class culture? Check. Award-winning schools? Check. Beautiful parks and accessible social services? Check and check. |
